The name of the street was given in 1739 by the nearby Italian Palace, which was built in the image and likeness of Italian entertainment houses. The dilapidated palace was dismantled at the beginning of the 19th century, and the Catherine Institute was erected in its place.
In the period from 1871 to 1902, the street was called Bolshaya Italianskaya, while Malaya Italianskaya was the modern street of Zhukovsky.
On August 4, 1878, on an Italian street, a S. Volodymyr Kravchinsky mortally wounded a dagger to the gendarme chief General Mezentsov, who was returning home on foot after morning service.
In 1923, the street was named after Commissar Alexander Semenovich Rakov (1885-1919), who died during the Civil War. The former name of the street was returned in 1991.
