Griboedov Canal is located in the heart of the Northern capital. It originates from the Moika River at the Field of Mars and flows into the Fontanka River at the Malo-Kalinkin Bridge. The length of the channel is 5 km. Width - 32 m. Depth reaches 3.5 m. The canal embankment has a similar name.

The channel was laid along the channel of Krivushi, the former Deaf River, originating from the swampy bog between the current squares: Konyushennaya and Arts. The channel was created under the Empress Catherine II, so it was immediately called Catherine.

In 1923, the channel was renamed, according to one version, in honor of the Russian playwright and diplomat Alexander Sergeyevich Griboedov, who lived in one of the houses on the canal embankment.

There is a legend according to which the name of the channel is associated only with the name of the engineer K. D. Griboedov, who was engaged in its improvement, and not with his namesake playwright.

But this legend is refuted by toponymy experts. The myth, allegedly, has no basis, because at first its Soviet people called the writer Griboedov’s channel, and since 1931 it became just the Griboedov’s channel.
